Team Spotlight: Christopher Coccagna

The Employee Spotlight is a Q&A series dedicated to our kick ass team building our growing company.

Today we are spotlighting Christopher Coccagna, Sr. Marketing Manager (Field, Event, & Partner) at Torq, Based in our Portland office. Christopher Joined Torq in September 2021.

Tell us a bit about your career path before Torq.

Prior to joining Torq, I balanced a dual life in entrepreneurship and cybersecurity marketing.  I’ve been the owner and operator of a handcrafted retail tea company out of San Francisco for 11 years and took my multitasking skills to the next level in cybersecurity marketing project management in 2018, focusing primarily on cloud security and brand campaigns. I’m so grateful for my experience as an entrepreneur, where I was required to wear every kind of sales/marketing/operations hat, because it really prepared me for this amazing, fast-paced opportunity at Torq.

Why did you come to work at Torq? What makes you excited about working here?

Torq is a marketer’s dream come true! From the product platform itself to how Torq adds value to our customers, Torq’s mission is to simplify in an industry that traditionally has built itself on complexity. I was drawn to the brand voice, the all-star team, and the opportunity to approach marketing in the cybersecurity space in a completely different way. As an entrepreneur, I also LOVE the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to jump in and learn any new skill. In the 7 months that I’ve been here at Torq, I’ve grown my career by leaps and bounds!

What’s the coolest thing you and your team are working on at Torq? ‍‍

I’m overly impressed with how Torq’s small but mighty marketing team approached our campaign at the 2022 RSAC conference in San Francisco. I’ve seen marketing organizations of hundreds tasked with the same job, and our team has built out one of the coolest integrated marketing campaigns I’ve experienced in my career. I’m proud to work alongside such creative, thoughtful individuals who do an amazing job of operating in our individual swimlanes but also coming together to support each other and produce something great.

What advice can you offer to someone looking to take on a role like yours?

I think marketers in the cybersecurity industry have followed a very rinse and repeat model of marketing for decades. If and when you come to Torq marketing, throw on your creative hat to tackle new challenges through a new lens. Dive in and learn something you thought you would never have the opportunity to learn and put your stamp on the culture and foundation of this great company.

Ok, now for the fun part! Tell us a little about yourself. When you log on in the morning, what do you do first?

Prior to logging in, I try to hop on my Peloton bike for a quick morning EDM music pick-me-up (#CultofJessKing). I then shower and brew a very caffeinated beverage (usually black coffee) fortified with lion’s mane mushroom, cacao, and cordyceps mushrooms (#CultofFungi). I then consult my top 3 objectives for the day and MAKE IT HAPPEN!

What helps you focus?

Music is my instrument for focus. My mind tends to wander a lot, so I need background music to help me think. Chill Vibes 2022 (moon emoji) tends to be my go-to for background music that won’t have me distractedly singing along and dancing in my chair. Also, unabashedly a “Swifty” here, so the Folklore and Evermore albums have me productively cruising through the workday.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, you will find me almost every day at my CrossFit gym (#SwoleBrah), cooking and studying culinary arts, sipping tea, reading boring non-fiction and business books, enjoying time at home with my family, and excessively playing chase with my french bulldog. Pre-pandemic, my husband and I were avid international travelers spending months/years abroad, but the pandemic has helped me slow down what was a TOO fast-paced life. I’ve spent the last year reclaiming my health and fitness, and the journey has changed my life.

As you know, there’s a strong Coffee lovers community at Torq – how do you drink your coffee?

A loaded question for a tea sommelier! I drink my coffee black and preferably as a pour-over. I’m a superfan of coffee from Africa and love anything with “coffee cherry” notes. Now to change the convo to tea, I’m an ultra fan of black teas from India and Japanese matcha. One day, I will start teaching tea classes to our coffee group here at Torq. Stay tuned…

How do you spend your weekends?

I spend my weekends as a total homebody. I will usually spend the weekend cooking, enjoying time with my husband and french bulldog, and hiking in all the amazing hikes around Lake Tahoe. I love interior design, so am usually also working on a unique house project, whether it be arranging succulent gardens or painting a wall mural, I’m always busy with a project (or mess) at home.

What’s the last great series you watched?

RuPaul’s Drag Race tends to consume 60% of my TV life, but I’ve managed to sneak in some new and rewatch old favorite TV shows from time to time. Derry Girls, Please Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Survivor, and Euphoria are some favorites to name a few.
