Team Spotlight: Rotem Linik

The #LifeatTorq Team Spotlight is a Q&A series dedicated to the talented and generally kick-ass team that form the foundation of our growing company.

Today we are spotlighting Rotem Linik, a Software Engineer at Torq based in our Tel Aviv office. Rotem Joined Torq in June 2021.

Tell us a little bit about your career background. How did you get to where you are today?

Rotem: Until 4 years ago, I was on a very different course from where I am today. I was in my first year of social work school when I attended a weekly meeting at SheCodes as a hobby. I enjoyed it so much (way more than what I was actually studying) so I decided to change my career path. I got into an amazing 7 month bootcamp program, where I learned not only how to code but also how to learn new materials on my own – the most important skill for a software developer in my eyes. After the bootcamp I was hired as a junior developer at Bank Hapoalim, the largest bank in Israel, where I gained experience and confidence working on production level products used by many Israelis. After working in such a big company in the banking industry, I wanted to work in a small, high-paced startup where the impact on the product is high. I chose Torq and am still so happy about my choice- almost a year later!

What do you love about working for Torq?

Rotem: Because the company is still relatively small, everyone is working on the main product so every piece of code you write is used by real customers- making their job easier and their organizations more secure!

What does a day in the life as a software engineer at Torq look like?

Rotem: Every day in Torq is completely different! Some days are packed with brainstorming and design sessions, other days I work on implementing cool features for our clients. But most days have a little bit of everything, which is just perfect.

What’s the most important thing you’ve accomplished at Torq?

Rotem: For me, the confidence I’ve gained and the ongoing learning are the greatest accomplishments. I’ve learned so much since getting here, and still do every day- from modeling data so it can scale easily, to writing code with high performance in mind, and creating services with great observability for quick real-time problem solving.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the office?

Rotem: I try to get to the office 20 minutes before I actually intend to start working, because there’s always interesting morning talk in the kitchen. I usually start my morning by sharing avocado toast with someone and making myself some green tea (yes, I know, I’m not taking any advantage of our La Marzocco and the amazing types of coffee we have here).

Okay, now for the fun part! What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?

Rotem: I practice yoga 3 times a week (one of them is actually in the office!) and as I live close to the beach, I try to watch the sunset at least once a week and walk on the Tel Aviv promenade. Besides that, I love traveling – whether it’s camping in Israel or exploring Michelin restaurants in Paris.

What is the most unique item you have in your closet?

Rotem: I have a vintage sports jacket my dad got in Berlin in his 20’s!

What’s the weirdest fact about you?

Rotem: I inspired almost EVERYONE in the office to make salads for lunch! If you pass by our kitchen around lunch time and see something that looks like a salad bar – I started the trend 😉

What’s your next travel spot?

Rotem: The USA for my honeymoon!
