Team Spotlight: Hagai Shapira

The #LifeatTorq Team Spotlight is a Q&A series dedicated to the talented and generally kick-ass team that form the foundation of our growing company.

Today we are spotlighting Hagai Shapira, Product Manager at Torq. Based in our Tel Aviv office, Hagai joined Torq in May 2020.

Tell us a bit about your career path before Torq.

Hagai: I spent a few years in the military leading teams of developers and researchers. After that, I was on the core team of another startup called SAM Seamless Network, building cybersecurity solutions for connected homes. I was there for about three years and then joined Torq.

How long have you worked in Torq?

Hagai: I have been working at Torq for the past 18 months, but for the first six months, I was actually working as an engineer. While for the past decade I’ve been working as a technical person, I always liked to see the bigger picture in my roles, leading people, and working with customers & sales. I was offered to move to our product team here at Torq, and I felt like it would be the place for me to make the most impact by understanding where we can make the most impact for our customers.

What do you like most about working at Torq?

Hagai: I love the people here. I get to work with amazing professionals who are also really fun people to be around – it’s the best combination and is what makes me happy to come into the office every day.

What advice can you offer to someone looking to take on a role like yours?

Hagai: The Product Team draws people from all kinds of disciplines. We have people who came from UX, from other sectors and past engineers. I think that no matter what you bring to the table, you should be able to communicate well with your engineering team and that means understanding the technology and what it is they do – even if you don’t know how to do it yourself.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

Hagai: I am most known around the company for my love of coffee. I think I helped create the awesome culture of #CoffeeLovers we have in the company. We have weekly morning coffee together at the best cafes in town, and I love to help colleagues learn how to make great coffee at our wonderful espresso machine in the office.

I also love to run and practice yoga – so I am really excited about the addition of our recent morning yoga classes.

What is the most unique item you have in your closet?

Hagai: It’s not the most unique but I have maybe more than 25 pairs of Happy Socks.  My partner and I love them and bring them as gifts to each other from our travels. I have some which are only sold in Tokyo and New York stores, so that’s maybe a bit more unique.

What’s something you’re planning on doing in the next year that you’ve never done?

Hagai: Getting married!

What’s the weirdest fact you know?

Hagai: Something recent I’ve learned has to do with coffee, of course.  There is a new coffee species that was discovered outside of the well-known Arabica and Robusta species. It’s called Eugenioides, and it’s grown on only one farm and is supposed to be really amazing.

What is your favorite travel spot?

Hagai: I love everywhere with beautiful mountains – the Andes, Himalayas, New Zealand, to name a few.
